Moving Tips
If you are planning to do your packing yourself, who better to take advice from than an experienced mover? Panneton & Panneton Moving and Storage offers you these tips:
- Use clean, strong corrugated cartons (boxes) in good condition. Cartons designed for moving are available from Panneton & Panneton, and we deliver them to you! Local grocery and other stores are often happy to give you assorted boxes (not all of them are necessarily suited for packing). Any box tht you use for packing must have a cover or a lid that can be closed and sealed.
- Newsprint (used to print newspapers, but new with no ink) is excellent for wrapping items prior to packing. The ink in newspapers never thoroughly dries. Items wrapped in newspapers will most likely be soiled and require cleaning after unpacking.
- Use packing paper generously, and fill the box so that its contents cannot shift during the move. Loosely packed boxes are one of the common causes of damage during a move.
- Pack heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes. No box should be too heavy to lift.
- Felt-tipped pens are ideal for marking boxes with information such as the contents, "Fragile", "This Side Up", and to which room it should be delivered.
- Clothes hung on hangers (suits, dresses, shirts, coats) are best packed in a mover’s wardrobe carton.
- Pack dresser drawers with light items (clothing, pillows, bedding, linens) to the drawer's capacity, but not stuffed. Heavy items in a dresser drawer can damage the drawer.
- Do not box televisions or computer monitors unless you have the original boxes. Computers and television sets will be padded with the mover's blankets on moving day.
Things to Not Pack!
Certain items are best kept with you during the move. Set these items aside, away from all the moving activity, and take them with you in your own personal transportation (car, small truck, taxi):
- the documents related to your move
- cash and securities, coin and stamp collections
- jewelry
- furs
- firearms (consult local laws)
- personal papers and documents (birth certificates, insurance policies, deeds, prescriptions
- family photographs and videos
- flammable items: lighter fluids, pressurized cans, paint remover, gasoline, ammunition, explosives. The law forbids movers to carry flammables.
Good Luck!
